Allston is a diverse neighborhood in the western part of Boston and a thriving hub of activity. Largely populated by students and young families, Allston caters to the individual looking for larger space at lower cost. Allston was named after the American artist and poet, Washington Allston and is often referred to as Allston-Brighton because of its close network with the adjacent neighborhood of Brighton. Allston’s streets are largely populated by specialty ethnic grocery stores, discount furniture shops, thrift stores, casual eateries, and live music venues. The architecture of Allston varies but mostly consists of older and often renovated brick buildings, of which many are apartments.
Allston is home to a variety of restaurants serving cuisine from Thailand, Afghanistan, Japan, Korea, China, and India and also due to its younger population is a hub for the arts and music venues such as Great Scott and O’Brian’s Pub. There is an annual Allston-Brighton Parade and Allston DIY Fest full of the areas local musically talented individuals. Part of Harvard is located in Allston including the Harvard Business School and Harvard Stadium. There are also public schools such as the Gardner Pilot Academy and the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing which is fascinatingly enough the oldest public school for the hearing impaired in the United States and was attended by Helen Keller. Allston is served by many bus lines, as well as the MBTA Green line and with its bustling younger and city limits atmosphere it is a prized location.
