Boston seems to be one of the central leaders in this green revolution when compared to other cities across the United States. Mayor Thomas M. Menino is relentless in his attempts to ‘Greenovate Boston’ and just recently announced the winners of the 6th Annual Mayor’s Green Awards. Businesses, sustainable food leaders and even individuals have been recognized by the city of Boston for their vast improvements within this Green ideology that seems to be piping through the Hub.
Water conservation, waste management, energy conservation, sustainable food production and more are some of the noteworthy points that were weighed to see who would measure up to be awarded such an accolade. Overall, eleven businesses, three specific individuals and two sustainable food leaders were awarded.
The award ceremony, held this year at P&G Gillette’s South Boston location on April 20th of 2012, saw Mayor Menino give the The Sustainability/Climate Action Leadership designation to the South End’s Castle Square Tenants Organization. In collaboration with Winn Development, this organization was ever so successful in reducing the energy output of a five-hundred unit apartment building by a staggering 72%! While using superior greening measures throughout the units in everything from heating/cooling systems, to the windows to even an insulated shell that lines the entire building. These initiatives taken will pay serious dividends in the long run for sustainability efforts and will prove to be very advantageous for the economy and environmental quality as well.
The overall goal of Greenovate Boston is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by the year 2020. All of these collaborative plans for the city will continue to resonate throughout all of the surrounding neighborhoods and will even create a plethora of new and inventive job opportunities. It is certainly an exciting time defined by transition in The Greater Boston Area, one in which our lives and the way that we view our homes will soon be forever changed.
