Addiction is often spoken of as a physical, mental and spiritual diseasemakingyogaa powerful adjunct to12-stepprograms.
Mary Kelleher is a seasoned Gibson Sothebys International Realty agent and the Founder of Yoga Home Yoga Aum, a non-profit yoga program working with teens, adults and veterans in 12-step recovery programs.
While there are several ways that people break the cycle of addiction, a body and mind connection can significantly help advance the healing process, says Kelleher. Yogais an excellent modality to help those in addiction recovery implement physical, mental and spiritual wellness in theirrecovery plan and let go of anxieties and worries.
Since 2015, Gibson Sothebys International Realtys Mary Kelleher has served as a volunteer at The Phoenix, a non-profit national organization and sober active community that offers various fitness classes including CrossFit, rock climbing, boxing and yoga, as well as surfing, running and hiking events all over the country. Scott Strode is the founder ofthe free exercise program, designed for anyone who remains sober for at least two days. Since 2006, the sober active community has inspired more than 22,000 people across America to believe they have the strength to rise from the ashes of addiction through the support of those who are walking that very same path.
Most of us have been affected by the disease of addiction, either directly or indirectly, commented Kelleher. By offering community, connection, support and hope, The Phoenix has a proven significant impact on the lives of those in recovery and their families.
ThePhoenixwas the first place that I found pride and strength in recovery, stated Michael Underhill, Manager of Community Partnerships and Development. Associating physical fitness achievements with my sobriety made it much easier to share my recovery journey with those closest to me. ThePhoenixhas given me the chance to thrive in recovery, rather than just survive.
The Phoenix will celebrate National Recovery Month in tandem with their grand opening at 54 Newmarket Street in Boston this Saturday, September 29 at 11AM. Guests will enjoy complimentary indoor rock climbing, guest speakers, private parking and lunch provided by gourmet food trucks.
