Bob McDermott, Sue McDermott, and Kenny MacCarthy of McDermott & MacCarthy.
Why did you decide to pursue a real estate career?
Once ourtwo children had graduated from college, we decided we wanted to do something creative together to help people. Bob had been commuting into Boston for 28 years following his passion, actively trading and successfully managing equity trading desks. As he puts it, I wanted to spend more time with Sue and see the ocean." Lucky me! He isa generous partner and respected business leader. I knew we could connect with others in real estate, too, as we had bought and sold several properties during our 34 year marriage and wanted to share those experiences. Partnering with our friend Kenny MacCarthy was the best decision we could make as he had succinct real estate systems we needed to learn. We love workingtogether to helpothers.
What is one thing your clients find comfort in that make them turn to you for their real estate needs?
Our clientsare confident that we have the resources to connect them to what they need every time. We arelocal problem solvers. We make a point in developing relationships with people at the Board of Health, Building Department, or City Hall. Our communication is clear and concise. People are looking for certainty and they know our teamthree people who have different but combined connections and relationshipswill help them get the answers they are seeking, quickly.
What are some of your favorite local activities that you participate in?
Living on the North Shore is a celebration unto itself. We live in Magnolia, one of Gloucesters waterfront neighborhoods. Ive been on the board of the Magnolia Library and Community Center, assisting in the annual Art Show and Road Race as well as two Comedy Nights hosted with our friends at Prince Pizzeria, Trish and Steve Castraberti, formerly ofMagnolia. I do love watching the festivities around St. Peters Fiesta!
What about the North Shore lifestyle excites you most?
Growing up in the Berkshires, I cherish wooded trails and nature. Every day, Bob and I take our German Shorthaired Pointer to Ravenswood, one of the stunning properties under the care of the Trustees of the Reservations where we watch Piper run freely, discovering lady slippers, pileated woodpeckers, and miles of trails and mud holes. Equally as stunning, and somethingNorth Shore residentsdeeply respect, is the ocean. We are surrounded by the beautiful Atlantic and enjoy the sandy beaches of Cape Ann. Music at Shalin Liu and the treasures at the Cape Ann Museum round out the culture. It's a magical place.
Describe your perfect day off.
What day off? Ha! We love what we do, so I am often involved with people connected to real estate. I love Boston, where our daughter lives, andsharing our love of art and restaurants is one of my favorite adventures. Locally, I make the loop on Shore Road, head to Good Harbor Beach for an afternoon swim, or go for a long hike or cross country ski in Ravenswood.
